Rosalía x Balenciaga: Materials and Merchandise
Undergraduate Project, 2022
The University of Texas at Austin
For his second undergraduate studies project, Lē conceptualized a collaboration between Balenciaga and Spanish pop star Rosalía, a apparel line inspired by album Motomami. Merging the rebellious energy of motocross culture with Balenciaga’s avant-garde design language, the project explored the power of materiality as a storytelling device.
Lē’s design approach centered on material innovation—experimenting with industrial fabric, reflective synthetics, and leather to articulate themes of duality present in both the album and moto culture. The collection reflects a tension between aggression and vulnerability, performance and ornamentation, tradition and futurism.
Grounded in cultural and material research, the project positions fashion as a medium for sonic and subcultural translation. Rosalía x Balenciaga challenges conventional narratives within moto-inspired apparel, offering a fresh perspective rooted in inclusivity, gender fluidity, and high-concept design.
